An anchor is a heavy metal thing, usually shaped like a cross with curved arms, on a strong rope or chain that is usually dropped from a boat into the water to prevent the boat from moving away, or it also can be plunged to change its path. Each ship has to have this object. By the way, the ship's anchor is attached to an enormous length of chain. Anchors can either be temporary or permanent.
